Museum Brandhorst spotlights eight major artists in new collection exhibition
Installation view "In My Head".

MUNICH.- With "In My Head. Contemporary Artistic Positions," Museum Brandhorst focuses on eight contemporary artistic positions. The exhibition invites the audience to immerse themselves in the work of these artists. On view are works by Nicole Eisenman, Jana Euler, Louis Fratino, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Deana Lawson, Martine Syms, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Kara Walker, including numerous new acquisitions and works being shown publicly for the first time.

The title refers to the creative process by which perceived reality in the mind is transformed and turned into art. Each room offers a unique insight into one artistic practice. Key works here provide a vivid experience of visual ideas, thematic questions, and formal approaches working together. Painting, photography, and sculpture are presented on an equal footing, reflecting the media range of both the Brandhorst Collection and the Eva Felten Photography Collection.

The works on display give artistic form to experiences of care and vulnerability, intimacy and desire, as well as violence and memory—experiences that extend far beyond the personal. Through the interplay of these works, diverse life realities, conflicts, and longings emerge that shape our present. Many of the artists draw on images, forms, and narratives from art history. For them, art history is an open repository of motifs and ideas that can be appropriated, shifted, and reassembled. Historical references open up new possibilities for expressing the present, rather than serving as a backward glance.

It is precisely the variety of these positions that demonstrates how closely aesthetic decisions are intertwined with individual experiences and feelings, as well as with social realities. "In My Head" invites the audience to explore these perspectives and encounter them within the works. At the same time, the presentation of the collection follows one of Museum Brandhorst's guiding principles. By focusing in depth on selected artists, it offers a closer look at their artistic practices.

With works by: Nicole Eisenman, Jana Euler, Louis Fratino, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Deana Lawson, Martine Syms, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Kara Walker.
