HAMBURG.- With her bold, gestural painting style, New York artist Joyce Pensato became the icon of the fusion of American pop culture and Abstract Expressionism. Mickey, Donald, Batman, The Simpsons, and South Park—through Pensato’s subversive appropriation, these familiar comic and cartoon characters reveal a darker, often unsettling yet deeply affecting side. EYES FOR YOU is the first major solo exhibition in Europe dedicated to the artist since her death in 2019.

The exhibition traces the development of Joyce Pensato’s work, from her early still lifes and Batman drawings of the 1970s to the large-scale black-and-white enamel paintings of the 1990s, in which the New York artist brought drawing and painting together for the first time. This marked a decisive turning point in her artistic practice. While her work had initially been strongly shaped by her training at the New York Studio School and the Abstract Expressionism prevalent there, her shift from oil to enamel gave her newfound freedom in gesture, material, abstraction, and expression.

For the exhibitions at Deichtorhallen in Hamburg and at the FRAC des Pays de la Loire (starting in spring 2027), approximately 20 works on loan from the Miami exhibition will be included and supplemented by a larger selection of works from European collections. Pensato’s subversive appropriation of comic and cartoon characters, which questions the visual language and mechanisms of popular culture, resonates in a special way with the Falckenberg Collection’s focus on counterculture. Accordingly, the Hamburg exhibition will be complemented by an accompanying presentation of works from the collection.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with ICA Miami and the Frac des Pays de la Loire and was originally curated by Alex Gartenfeld, Irma and Norman Braman Artistic Director at ICA Miami; Gean Moreno, Director of the Art + Research Center and Monica and Blake Grossman Curator at ICA Miami; and Stephanie Seidel, former curator at ICA Miami.

Joyce Pensato (1941–2019) was born in Brooklyn, New York City, to a father who had immigrated from Sicily and an Italian-American mother. Her father worked as a printer and printmaker, collaborating with artists on their books, and encouraged her early interest in art. Pensato first studied at the Art Students League of New York and then, beginning in 1973, attended the New York Studio School for about six years. There, Mercedes Matter in particular became a formative teacher and mentor; Joan Mitchell, whom Pensato met during her final year of study, also played a significant role in her artistic development.

Although Pensato was highly regarded in artistic circles as an “artist’s artist,” her wider recognition came relatively late. A key factor in this was her collaboration with the Petzel Gallery in New York, which presented Pensato’s first solo exhibition in 2007. In 2013, the Santa Monica Museum of Art presented “I Killed Kenny,” Pensato’s first solo museum exhibition. This was followed by institutional solo exhibitions, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the Kunstraum Innsbruck, both in 2016.

Today, works by Joyce Pensato can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Falckenberg Collection, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Frac des Pays de la Loire in Carquefou, France, among others.
