David Renggli, For what you Belive Something you don't Believe, metal, brrome, laquer, 2006.

SACRAMENTO, CA.-Alexandre Pollazzon Ltd will present Swiss artist David Renggli. Over the last few decades, Swiss art has been recognised for its sense of irony, served as a reaction to the reputation of a country where precision, seriousness and rigour is key.

Renggli’s distinctive and uncanny oeuvre is no exception, which consists of slapstick sculptures, large-scale installations that conjure the surreal and absurd and, melancholic still-life photography. The exhibition at Alexandre Pollazzon Ltd comprises a new installation that encapsulates the spirit of a teenage bedroom. A nurturing place for a young adult, in this case, a young man.

Within the gallery, ironically decorative, yet dysfunctional furniture sits alongside chrome abstract replicas of metal gym equipment against a backdrop of patina wood panelling. Windows set within the main room, portend to look into the night, but instead catches one’s futile gaze, whilst the generic poster on the wall is substituted for a 1.30m diametre disc that spins slowly as it is approached, so as to distort the pornographic image that sits in the centre.

Ambiguity and instability plays a big part within Renggli’s artistic and aesthetic world whereby the practice is not limited to any particular medium or strict interpretation of the subject. Through the transformation of everyday household objects and low-grade materials, Renggli’s works strike a ‘rare balance between surrealism and precision’.

David Renggli was born was born 1974, Zurich, Switzerland where he continues to live and work. Recent exhibitions include 2007: Via Farini, Milan (solo); Arario Gallery, Seoul; Triennale der Kleinplasticken, Felbach/Stuttgart. 2006: FLACA, London; ‘House Warming’, Swiss Institut, New York; ‘Aller Retour 2 / Carte blanche à Fischli & Weiss’, Centre Culturel Suisse, Paris; ‘The Expanded Eye’, Kunsthaus, Zurich.
