CHICAGO.-Inspired by rupturing and transforming avian figures, Noelle Allen’s graphite and watercolor drawings embody a fantastical aesthetic. The June UBS 12 x 12 New Artists/New Work exhibit features largescale phantasmagoric drawings on fragile Mylar sheets on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago, opening at First Fridays on June 1 and running through July 1, 2007. Allen’s drawings detail a gothic microscopic landscape of unknown yet vaguely familiar creatures. When closely examined, the viewer may find representations of bird anatomy. Referencing fossil studies and scientific renderings of cellular mitosis, the works explore the process of decay and transformation. The graphite drawings are very intricate and incorporate broad washes of muted color. The Mylar sheets are pinned directly to the walls with dissection pins to further emphasize the fragile and ever-evolving nature of living organisms.
Allen received her BA in studio art from Smith College in 2002 and her MFA in sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004. Allen leads a gallery tour of her exhibition on Tuesday, June 12, at 6:30 p.m.
