GATESHEAD, UK.- BALTIC presents Newcastle based British artist, Graham Dolphin's first solo public gallery show in the UK. Repeater will be the first in a series of exhibitions by young up-and-coming artists, living and working in the region.

Repeater will bring together several strands of Dolphin’s practice. These encompass the meticulously made and inscribed record albums, the altered magazine covers and his video and sound pieces that use found footage and sounds from pop culture and the world of fashion and film.

Dolphin often works directly onto ready-made objects such as vinyl records and fashion magazines. He scratches passages of minute, immaculate text into their surfaces. Working with a wide range of media, he transforms fashion, film and music icons into artworks that reveal the obsessions of the world of mass culture.

Graham Dolphin looks at a familiar object or image, shifting it just enough so we are able to look at it again. The scratched record can never be played and the magazine can never be read. These objects speak to us about obsession, but also about the way in which we all live through these cultural objects

His artworks punctuate the visitor’s journey through the gallery and occupy a range of spaces throughout. This innovative curatorial approach allows visitors the opportunity to experience his often intimate art forms as they infiltrate sometimes unexpected areas of the building.

Framed works are displayed on pink walls on each of the gallery floors and a work entitled 1000 Questions is penned directly onto the entrance walls. Condensed Vertigo, a sound work which is taken from the original score from the Hitchcock film, will fill the stairwell with swirling strings and brass, and a new video work made especially for his BALTIC show, Spangled Banner Recurring, will run in the performance space until 20 June.
