Duncan MacDonald, boules de gui VIII.
|
TORONTO, CA.- p|m Gallery presents a new series of drawings and video by Duncan MacDonald . More known for his performance and audio-based work, boules du gui is MacDonalds witty foray into traditional charcoal drawing. MacDonalds French landscapes (from time spent in Loire ) are reminiscent of the Romantic period, teetering between sardonic and sublime. The series of large scale drawings presented in a salon style hanging dwarf and overwhelms the viewer.
Several attempts of crying on demand, 2005 is in part a critique on media manipulation and fear mongering; MacDonald imagined what his response to media questions about catastrophic current events might be. The next thing he imagined is what it would be like to cry on television and how he would practice.
Duncan MacDonald is a contemporary artist currently based in St. Catharines , Canada . There, he has taught cultural theory, foundation studio in visual arts, interdisciplinary studio, and drawing at Brock University . MacDonald holds a BFA in Visual Arts from York University and an MFA in Fine and Media Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He works with audio, performance, video, photography, drawing, and diverse media to explore the uncanny and the unfamiliar. His works have been exhibited, performed and featured throughout Canada , the US , South America and Europe . Recent projects include a residency at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France generously funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, researching the history of the piano and pianoforte (and attempted to get lost in Paris), writing and recording a soundtrack for French artist Emmanuelle Raynauts performance: Ceci nest pas une peinture, exhibiting new photo-works, drawings and video at Brock University in St. Catharines (Drifts), performing in an audio art symposium, Discophany at the Niagara Artist Centre, and exhibiting work in Object Lessons, a sound art exhibition at paved art + New Media (Saskatoon, SK).
