NEW YORK.- Christie’s The Dog Sale was a success with a total sale of $2,169,840. 50 lots were sold. Thomas Blinks, Waiting for the Guns, 1894 sold for $564,000, a world auction record for the artist. John Singer Sargent’s Pointy sold for $432,000. Jean-Léon Gérôme, Etude de Chien de Terra-Nuova, 1852 sold for $204,000.

“We are very pleased with our inaugural Dog Sale, which achieved the highest ever total in this auction category. Several world auction records were achieved including for Thomas Blinks, which at $564,000 doubled the previous record. Another spectacular price was Sargent's very rare portrait of Pointy, which made $432,000, over five times the high estimate. There was very strong bidding amongst American private clients for works across the spectrum, from the academic portrait by Gérome to the whimsical sculpture of Niki de Saint Phalle, which showed the enduring appeal of this subject-matter. Our next Sporting Art Sale will be on November 28 in New York,” said Clare McKeon, VP, British & Irish Art.
