Pablo Atchugarry: Espacio Intimo in San Francisco
Pablo Atchugarry,“Untitled”, 51 x 9 x 3.5 in. (129 x 23 x 9 cm), Carrara marble, 2006.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA. –Frey Norris Gallery presents Pablo Atchugarry: Espacio Intimo, on view through July 29, 2007. Since 1982, Uruguayan native Pablo Atchugarry has made his home in Lecco, Italy, where he has worked primarily in Italian Carrara marble. Studying masterpieces by artists like Michelangelo and Antonio Canova has infused Atchugarry's unique abstract idiom of folded translucent stone with a sensuality and angular modernism distinct in the current sculptural landscape.

Twenty-five years after his arrival in Italy, his home has grown to include a large studio and permanent museum and Atchugarry's marble works have become increasingly large and ambitious, the current project "Cosmic Embrace" rising almost thirty feet high and weighing approximately 55 tons. Such monuments have been installed across Latin America and Europe and his work has exhibited in dozens of museums from Buenos Aires to Seoul, Genoa, Paris and Belgium.

Twelve sculptures in pink and white marble will populate the gallery with the elegant, undulating and sometimes jagged and angular abstract forms that have become this internationally renown artist’s hallmark. Sizes range from just over 22 inches to nearly eight feet (and weighing half a ton). Wall didactics will present photos and information on the artist’s career and accomplishments to date, particularly his inclusion in the 2003 Venice Biennial; an invitation to participate by your native country is considered one of the most prestigious honors a living artist can receive.
