LONDON.-Following the success of last year’s sale, Bonham’s announced a similar forthcoming auction this autumn. This year, the focus will be somewhat wider, incorporating subject matter beyond the Indian subcontinent, and stretching towards the Far East.
Highlights will include: a fine collection of 20 botanical watercolours possibly executed in India, c.1805 (estimate £20,000 – 30,000); James Hunter’s Picturesque Scenery in the Kingdom of Mysore, 1805 (estimate £3,000 – 5,000); an album of Willoughby Wallace Hooper photographs, including native portraits and views in Hyderabad, 1870s (estimate £2,000 – 4,000).
Last year strong prices were achieved for a wide variety of items, including an album relating to the British in Tibet c.1924 (£2,160), Lord Curzon’s shikar party c.1900 (£2,280), an exceptional Bourne & Shepherd and Hooper album c.1865-1878 (£45,600), seven views and portraits in Afghanistan, the North West Frontier and the Punjab 1860s-70s (£1,020), a hand-coloured portrait photograph of Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner c.1895 (£2,040), an album of Burma around 1900 (£780), Murray’s iconic image of the Jagmandar Water-Palace at Udaipur 1874 (£2,520), portraits of 30 members of the Nizam of Hyderabad’s court (£3,840), Philip Henry Egerton’s photographically illustrated Journal of a Tour through Spiti 1864 (£5,520), Richard Banner Oakeley’s Pagoda of Hallibeed 1859 (£12,000), Photographic Views in Madura by Tripe 1858 (£60,000), and a large hand-coloured lithographed view of Calcutta after William Prinsep c.1845 (£3,840).
