Seasonal Celebrations, Daily Life: Photographs by Graciela Iturbide
Graciela Iturbide, Mujer / Angel Woman, 1980.

LINCOLN, NE.- Sheldon presents a 30-year perspective on the work of Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide. Poet and critic Roberto Tejada describes Iturbide’s work as an exploration of: “those spaces between the observer and the observed; between the system and the gesture; between cultural inheritance and the damages of history; between the liquid undertones of collective memory and its wagers on the future.”

Iturbide was born in 1942 in Mexico City. She worked as an assistant to Mexico’s foremost photographer Manuel Alvarez Bravo in the early 70s. While some images are simply found, others are set up like early studio imagery. Iturbide takes time to get acquainted with her subject and works collaboratively with them to determine the appropriate setting for the photograph.

Iturbide’s images are about the present but also give voice to Mexico’s indigenous past. Her interest in seasonal celebrations and tradition combined with the role of women in society and everyday life provide a glimpse of the historical and cultural complexity of Mexico and its people.

A gallery guide for Seasonal Celebrations, Daily Life is available. On Tuesday, October 16, Elizabeth Ferrer, a New York-based writer, will present a lecture and slide show about Iturbide's photography. The exhibition is on view through December 09, 2007.
