Posteritati Presents An Exhibition of Vintage Film Posters

NEW YORK.-This fall, Posteritati remembers the works of two masters of cinema with a special movie poster exhibit. The exhibit will run from October 2, 2007 through January 31, 2008 and feature original movie posters from the films of Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni. A selection of posters of 35 arthouse classics from 13 different countries, spanning half a century, from early rarities such as Bergman's Sawdust and Tinsel (1953) and Antonioni's The Vanquished (1954), through to Bergman's searing swan song, Saraband (2005) and Eros (2004), the three part film to which Antonioni contributed Il filo pericoloso delle cose. On exhibit will be the original Swedish posters for Bergman's Persona (1966), with its iconic filmstrip design, and Fanny and Alexander (1982), as well as rarely seen images from some of the directors' most popular works; a powerful Czech poster for Bergman's Persona (1966) designed by NÄ›meček & Osecký, which shows Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson, embracing, carved into a textured stone surface; a Belgian poster for Antonioni's Blow-Up (1966) with a wild psychedelic illustration by Belgian painter and poster artist, Robert Detheux; a Czech poster for the same film with a baffling photo-montage design by Milan Grygar, which shows an image of David Hemmings and a nude Jane Birkin repeated four times, juxtaposed with a cartoon hand and stadium seating chart. Other films represented in the exhibit are Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), Le Amiche (1955), Il Grido (1957), The Seventh Seal (1957), Wild Strawberries (1957), The Magician (1958), The Virgin Spring (1960), L'avventura (1960), La Notte (1961), Through a Glass Darkly (1961), L'eclisse (1962), The Silence (1963), Red Desert (1964), Zabriskie Point (1970), The Passenger (1975), Autumn Sonata (1978), and From the Life of the Marionettes (1980).

Posteritati, named “the best place to be reminded that all film art isn't on-screen” by The Village Voice, is one of the world’s premier dealers of vintage and contemporary movie art. If you “need the movie poster that says ‘You, You, You.’ Posteritati…is the place to start” (New York Times Style Magazine, 2004). From the silent era to modern classics, the Posteritati gallery boasts a collection of over 13,000 original movie posters from 38 different countries, “a literal vault of old movie posters” (Lucky Magazine, 2001), searchable via Intel iMac customer kiosks or online at www.posteritati.com .

The Posteritati gallery is located in downtown New York at 239 Centre Street between Broome and Grand Streets, directly across the street from the historic Police Building. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm, Sunday from noon to 6 pm, and Monday by appointment.
