NEW YORK CITY.-November 2, 2007 New York: Yeshiva University Museum will present an exhibition of photographs by Win Robins, on view from November 4 February 24, 2008. The exhibition will be comprised of 44 color digital photographs, all on public view for the first time. Photographs in the exhibition will depict scenes of joy and celebration in Tsfat, one of the 4 Jewish holy cities in northern Israel, as well as in the neighboring village of Meron. Images capture various celebrations during the year, including Lag BOmer, the Hallel service with musical instruments unique to the Beirav Synagogue in the Old City, and scenes of dancing with on the holiday of Simchat Torah.
Famed for the kabbalists and mystics who once lived there, Tsfat has a large presence of Hasidim, Sephardim, along and Ethiopian and Russian immigrants. In Meron, one of the most famous Kabbalists, Shimon Bar Yochai, is buried, and hundreds of thousands regularly gather at or take pilgrimages to his grave, especially on the holiday of Lag BOmer.
Win Robins is a frequent visitor to Israel, where he devotes his time to photographing daily life and working as a volunteer for Livnot ULehibanot, a Jewish service organization. Robins is a retired lawyer and corporate executive, as well as a graduate of Amherst College and Harvard Law School. He is a contributing editor of Emunah Magazine, where he is also the principal photographer in Israel. His most recent exhibition was at the Yeshiva University Museum in 2003, featuring images of Ethiopian Jews in Ethiopia and Israel.
