LONDON.-The sale of Japanese Art and Design including the Robert Moore Collection and Japanese Prints including the B.W. Robinson Collection realised £2,526,501 and was 75 % sold by value and 69% sold by lot.

The top lot was Katsushika Hokusai (1760 - 1849), Gaifu kaisei [South Wind, Clear Weather], 'Pink Fuji' which realised £288,500 and set a World Auction Record for a Japanese Print.

Comment: Mark Hinton , International Specialist Head of Japanese Art and Design“This sale saw the success of two private collections, those of Robert Moore and the late B.W. Robinson. The latter along with prints from European private collections demonstrated the great strength of the Japanese print market with Hokusai’s Gaifu Kaisei, known as the ‘Pink Fuji’ realizing £288,500, a world auction record for a Japanese print. The famous collection of Kuniyoshi Prints from B.W. Robinson was 86% sold and set a world auction record for a print by the artist with the triptych of Cats which realized £38,900. Demand for exceptional swords has continued as seen by the result for the Negamitsu. The Private Collection of Robert Moore saw strong results for early ceramics including Nabeshima. Christie’s international Japanese Art team has seen renewed vigor for Japanese Art in 2007, with three world auction records set in London and the first lot to sell for over $1million in New York in the last decade. It is very pleasing to see the top two lots of today’s sale bought by Japanese.”
