OTTAWA.- Commenting on the rise of new communication technologies in the mid-20th century, the late Canadian communications theorist Marshall McLuhan coined the now iconic mantra the medium is the message. Widely misunderstood or trivialized, McLuhans statement in fact makes explicit the integral relationship in media art practices between subject matter and the particular medium of expression - TV, video, computers and electronics - that conditions its creation and the viewers subsequent response. This selection of works from the early 1970s to the present, including those of influential media-based artists including Nam June Paik, Jean-Pierre Boyer, and emerging artists Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins, explores the relationship between electronic media and aesthetic experience.
