VANCOUVER.- Dennis Oppenheim's sculpture, Device to Root out Evil gains a progressive new home through Calgary's Glenbow Museum, Vancouver's Benefic Foundation and a major Alberta arts sponsor to be announced in the coming days.
Originally celebrated by the Vancouver Sculpture Biennale and arguably the most valuable piece of public art in Vancouver; Oppenheim's compelling 22-foot glass, steel and aluminum structure became more than the Vancouver Public Parks Committee could handle.
John Bromley, Vice President of the Benefic Group and a representative for Benefic Foundation, credits Glenbow's constructive, rapid and insightful initiative.
"What a contrast to the Vancouver public art process," said Bromley. "There is no doubt this is a real loss that will hopefully stimulate reflection and review. But Vancouvers loss is a big win for Calgary, for Glenbow and for the artist to be recognized in another Canadian city.
Glenbow Museum is delighted to welcome the work of world renowned artist Dennis Oppenheim to Calgary, said Jeff Spalding, Glenbow Museums President and CEO. Oppenheims artwork is in some of the world's most prestigious collections including London, Englands Tate Gallery and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Its now time for Calgarians to be inspired and challenged by his sculpture.
The sculpture is scheduled to be dismantled and transported to Calgary, Alberta next week. The details of its installation in Calgary will be announced at a later date.
