MIAMI, FL.-Los Angeles-based artist Sean Duffy, best known for fusing multiple turntables into functional, mutant single players, is creating an installation specifically for his upcoming exhibition at Miami Art Museum. The new work is inspired by California pop culture of the 60s, said Assistant Director for Programs/Senior Curator Peter Boswell, complete with a zebra-striped Toyota Land Cruiser, densely layered logos reminiscent of the eras custom car culture and fire engine red gas containers that double as music players.
At the center of Duffys work is a fascination with the phenomenon of repetition, the cyclical reoccurrence of movements in popular culture as well as in art, and such connected strategies as recycling and sampling. From these explorations Duffy questions the relationships between the original and the copy, between the authentic and the knock-off, and the sense of detachment that happens each time something is repeated or recycled.
Sean Duffy is organized by Miami Art Museum and curated by Assistant Director for Programs/Senior Curator Peter Boswell as part of New Work, a series of projects by leading contemporary artists.
Duffys residence in Miami in conjunction with his show at MAM is being sponsored by The Fountainhead Residency, which provides artists from around the world, working in any medium, the opportunity and space to live and work in Miami for up to two months.
About the artist - Duffy received his BA from the University of California in San Diego and an MFA from the University of California at Irvine. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Luckman Gallery, California State University Los Angeles; Arizona State University Art Museum; and Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects. He has exhibited at the Orange County Museum of Art; Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; Studio Museum in Harlem; Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, and at the Santa Monica Museum of Art.
About the Curator - Exhibition curator Boswell has been Assistant Director for Programs/Senior Curator at Miami Art Museum since September 1999. He is responsible for oversight of all activities of the curatorial and education departments at the museum, including exhibitions and public programs. Recent exhibitions he has curated at MAM include Vik Muniz: Reflex (2006); Power of Ten and Enrique Martínez Celaya: Nomad (2007) and Disappearances, Shadows and Illusions (2008). Prior to joining MAM, Mr. Boswell served for three years as Heiskell Arts Director at the American Academy in Rome and for 10 years on the curatorial staff of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
