Straight from the Artist's Mouth: A Gallery Talk with Artist Sigmund Abeles

ASHEVILLE, NC.- Explore the work of artist Sigmund Abeles with the artist himself during a gallery talk at the Asheville Art Museum starting at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 as part of the exhibition Uncommon Expressions: The Drawings of Sigmund Abeles and Jerome Witkin.

“Sigmund Abeles is one of the finest figurative artists living today. His lines convey an intensity of meaning that can be read on numerous levels,” said Sandy Rupp, director of Hampton 3 Galleries in Taylors, SC. “The psychological insights into character and personality are evident to all who take the time to look.”

Asheville Art Museum Curator, Frank Thomson has invited the public to attend this special gallery talk to learn more about Abeles’s work from the person who knows it the best.

“I have enjoyed Abeles’s work for many years,” Thomson said. “He is a masterful draughtsman who creates works that express a wide range of emotional states from whimsical to the somber.”

Abeles (1934- ) was born in Brooklyn , NY and grew up in Myrtle Beach , SC.
His prints have received international acclaim and his work is in the permanent collections of more than 100 museums, galleries, universities and corporations including the Library of Congress, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston , New York ’s Brooklyn Museum , Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art.

Uncommon Expressions: The Drawings of Sigmund Abeles and Jerome Witkin is organized and curated by the Asheville Art Museum and will be on display in Gallery 6 through Sunday, August 31, 2008.
