BERLIN.- The Foundation of Prussian Cultural Heritage's Board of Trustees has unanimously elected Dr. Michael Eissenhauer to the post of general director of the National Museums in Berlin, following on from Peter-Klaus Schuster on the 1 November 2008.
Michael Eissenhauer, originally from Stuttgart, studied Art History, Classical Archeology and German Literature in Tübingen and Hamburg and has a Ph.D in Art History. Before being assigned the post of director of the Staatliche Museen Kassel (now renamed the Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel), Dr. Eissenhauer, worked at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg and the German Historical Museum in Berlin. From 1995 to 2001 he was director of the Art Collection of the Veste Coburg. Since 2001 he has served as director of the Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel, which ranks as one of the largest museum institutions in Germany. In addition to his, in his capacity as president of the German Museums Association since 2003, Michael Eissenhauer has also represented the interests of over 6000 museum institutions in Germany.
