Historical Buildings Become Unsafe in Miami

MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA.- The city of Miami Beach issued emergency demolition orders for five historically significant buildings on September, reported the Miami Herald. Several historic buildings are becoming unsafe. Among the five buildings is the old Sasson hotel at 2009 Collins Ave.. This is an Art Deco structure that will now become a $190 million hotel. Last week, the Historic Preservation Board held an emergency meeting to try to save the building. According to preservationists the building department could condemn buildings too quickly. They also suspect developers could be deliberately neglecting the buildings. The city staff plans to propose "demolition by neglect" ordinance to the Planning Board. This proposal would have historic buildings owners do basic maintenance and protection to these buildings.
