Painter Margaret Tomkins, 85, Dies |

SEDONA, ARIZONA.- Painter Margaret Tomkins, 85, died. Her husband, sculptor James Fitzgerlad, died in 1973. She had exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago; the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco; the Seattle Art Museum; Tacoma Art Museum; and the University of Washington's Henry Art Gallery. Barbara James, senior curator at the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner stated, "We've lost a very forceful artist. She went her own way and left her mark on her own kind of abstraction." James stated that their museum had been interested in holding a retrospective on Tomkins.
