Primary Illustrator For The Shadow, Edward D. Cartier, 94, Dies

RAMSEY, N.J.- Edward D. Cartier, 94, the primary illustrator for The Shadow and other science fiction and mystery publications, passed away at his home in Ramsey, reported his son Dean Cartier. Edward D. Cartier was best known for his illustrations of The Shadow in the 1930’s and 1940’s. The Shadow was written by Walter B. Gibson and featured a mysterious crime fighter that wore a black attire. He also illustrated works by authors like Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein.

He began to do illustrations for novels in 1936. He was offered the job of assistant to Norman Rockwell but turned it down. Carter drew more than 800 illustrations for The Shadow and hundreds for several science fiction magazines. In the 1950’s he was the main artist for Fantasy Press and Gnome Press book publishing houses.

According to Dean Cartier, his father created a Christmas card that he sent to family and friends each year starting in the late 1970s. He drew the last one, drawn in 2005, and depicted Santa Claus handing "The Shadow" a gift.
