NEW YORK.- A monumental bronze sculpture by the Spanish artist Manolo Valdés will be exhibited next April 21 in the heart of Manhattan, between Park Avenue and 57th street, announced the Marlborough Gallery at a press conference. The sculpture, titled "The Lady", is nearly four meters high, weighs some 5,500 kilograms, and consists of a modern interpretation of the Lady of Elche, the most important work in Iberian art. The Lady of Elche was discovered in some funerary deposits in Alcudia, which belonged to Manuel Campello, who sold it to the Louvre Museum where it remained until 1942. That year it was returned to Spain and is now conserved at the Archaeological Museum of Madrid. Valdés has been living in New York for years, although he travels frequently to Spain and around the world. "This image inspired me and continues to inspire me" - he added – “and I believe that I will continue working with this seductive image using different materials to achieve different results". The artist from Valencia is considered to be one of the best living painters and sculptors from Spain. "The Lady" was presented in a public exhibition in Paris in the spring of 2001.
