MINNEAPOLIS, MN.- Walker Art Center offers teens an opportunity to explore identity through various media under the guidance of two professional video artists in the Fake it, For Real: Media Workshop, held Mondays and Wednesdays, June 15July 1, 14 pm in the Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab. Lars Jerlach and Helen Stringfellow of Tectonic Industries will be on hand to help participants navigate film, video, and new media on a quest to find the truth, or to simply distort it.
Aliases, avatars, usernames, and profiles are the ways that we use media to depict ourselves to others. But are these really you? Does it even matter? Jerlach and Stringfellow will pose these questions throughout the workshop as teens develop their own projects. To conclude their two-week experience, participants will share their multimedia productions in a final showcase on Thursday, July 2, at 6 pm.
A collaborative art partnership based in St. Paul, Tectonic Industries seeks to examine the artifice inherent within the creation of the modern myths and belief systems of popular culture. Their unique body of work, from photography to video to installation, reveals a fascination with visual, literal, televisual and cinematic forms that centers on appearances and narrative.
Fake it, For Real: Media Workshop registration is due by June 8 and is limited to 16 high-school age participants. The registration fee is $35 ($30 Walker members). To register or to inquire about scholarships, e-mail teenprograms@walkerart.org or call 612.375.7628.
