BONN.- Raimund Kummer was born in 1954. He belongs to those artists who have been focussing on conditions regarding the production and presentation of art since the seventies. Further achievements were a wider concept of material and sculpture, and also the introduction of a narrative category in sculpture. By claiming public places as venues for art and through his context related works, Raimund Kummer anticipated artistic approaches which have long since become established.

The establishment of the now legendary “Büro Berlin” was a pioneering feat. (1980, together with Hermann Pitz und Fritz Rahmann). This unofficial association of artists not only introduced a new concept of artistic production but also occupied new areas: as the photo work “Skulpturen in der Straße (=Sculptures In Streets)” (1978/79) proves, anywhere at all can be a likely venue for art. He “re-entered” the institutionalised art world through photography which he consistently developed in the third dimension. He also claimed uncharted artistic territory in this field. In the middle of the 1980’s, he started developing photo sculptures which could be extended as installations. Seeing and perceiving simultaneously became the main focus in his work. These issues represent the central theme in his work. At the same time, seeing refers to the cosmos of the five senses which is implicitly formulated in Raimund Kummer’s work. Consequently, his art sees itself as an appeal to the senses which is partly expressed in “baroque” room filling installations. This extremely complex survey of Kummer’s thirty years of artistic production will now be on show in the Kunstmuseum Bonn.
