Monterey Museum of Art Debuts New Contest Where Oh Where in Monterey?

MONTEREY, CA.- There is now yet another compelling reason to visit Made in Monterey at the Monterey Museum of Art-Pacific Street. Besides the beauty of the sweeping 50th Anniversary exhibition and engaging new family gallery activities, locals and visitors alike can try their hand at a contest titled Where Oh Where in Monterey? Monterey’s glorious landscape and romantic architecture has sparked the creativity of generations of artists. While many of these historic scenes are immediately recognizable, others have changed over the decades.

Participants can put their sleuthing skills to the test by correctly identifying nine different locations selected from works in the exhibition. Entry forms that correctly identify all locations depicted will be entered into a drawing to win a one-night stay at one of the luxurious Inns of Monterey, including the Hotel Pacific, Monterey Bay Inn, Spindrift Inn, Victorian Inn and the new Hotel Abrego. Entry forms are available at MMA Pacific Street, 559 Pacific Street or MMA La Mirada, 720 Via Mirada or on the Museum website www.montereyart.org.

One winner will be chosen each month from June through October. One entry is allowed per person and Museum employees and volunteers are not eligible. There is no purchase necessary to enter and players must be over eighteen. Completed entry forms may be returned to either Museum location to be entered into the drawing.

Recently the Museum unveiled family gallery activities to enhance the Museum experience for children. The Tour in a Tote, Discovery Spots and the new Museum mascot, Artie the Octopus, help children explore art in creative new ways. These activities are included with regular admission at MMA Pacific Street. Included are art activities to complete in the Museum using an artist’s tool box, interactive opportunities to discover how paintings are made, tools to see photographs in new and delightful ways, a scavenger hunt, gallery map, doodle station, reading nook, listening station and photographer’s corner.

Now on view through June 21, 2009, at MMA La Mirada is 50/fifty: 50 Gifts for the Next Fifty Years, an exhibition of gifts to the Museum’s permanent collection in honor of the Museum’s 50th Anniversary. A family gallery guide accompanies the exhibition. Now on view through October 25, 2009, at MMA Pacific Street is Made in Monterey, a sweeping exhibition of the most beloved and important works from the permanent collection celebrating the painting, photography and contemporary art of California.
