CESKY KRUMLOV, CZECH REPUBLIC.- The Egon Schiele Studio in Cesky Krumlov was restored. The studio which played so large a role in nurturing Egon Schiele’s creativity and artistic genius languished in relative obscurity for 80 years.

Today, the studio has been restored to rightful place in art history. The Egon Schiele Studio and the garden terraces have become a center for artistic _expression. Schiele’s beloved studio has been invigorated with new cultural life.

Scheduled events and activities include international art exhibits, art classes and directed studies which appeal to the highest artistic talents and demands.

Schiele created some of his most important and celebrated works at the Studio in Cesky Krumlov/Czech Republic. He became prolific painting landscapes and portraits continuously. It was here that he started to paint stark, evocative and unusual self-portraits. The nude body also became a central theme. When weather permitted, he liked to paint on the garden terraces. Surrounded by beds of bountiful flowers his naturalist inclinations were awakened.

In the studio, sketches depicting Cesky Krumlov were transformed into paintings and drawings, Schiele often painted cityscapes on wooden panels.

Schiele wrote to his friend and benefactor Arthur Roessler: "...It is raining continuously, but I don’t mind. I can paint the garden from my studio. I have already begun larger paintings and, although I do not work without interruption, I will continue to work until I am completely satisfied." In Cesky Krumlov people were often critical of Schiele’s work. However, he remained confident that his talent would one day be fully recognized. Schiele stated:"One day a commerative plaque will be attached to the Studio." That day would, indeed, come to pass.

Today the Studio and gardens are open to the world in the memory and spirit of Egon Schiele.
