SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.- An auction of giant eggs decorated by Australian artists including Martin Sharp has raised $50,000 for the Ted Noffs Foundation charity. Foundation spokeswoman Shane Dobbin said 20 prominent artists had agreed to draw on, paint or photograph the eggs, which measured 20cm by 30cm and were made of polystyrene and resin. Martin Sharp's egg, portraying happy and sad faces in blue on a plain white background, had attracted the highest bid at $4,500, Ms Dobbin said. The average bid was $2,000 from the 250 guests at the ''Eggstravaganza'' auction at the ANA Hotel, in Sydney's Rocks area. With ticket sales and raffles proceeds added to the $50,000 from the 20 eggs sold, the night had raised a total of $70,000 for the foundation, she said. The money would go towards the charity's high school alcohol and drug program, helping provide counselors and aiding students, parents and families. Other artists contributing eggs included Kerri Lester, Pro Hart, and Aboriginal painter Josephine Napurrula, whose egg in earth tones featured a contemporary dot design.
