WOLVERHAMPTON.- Work on Paper, a brand new exhibition at Wolverhampton Art Gallery takes visitors on an inspiring visual journey looking at historical and contemporary artworks created using paper, exploring techniques such as printmaking, drawing, watercolours, sculpture, and collage. Over the summer families are invited to explore the exhibition and get creative at the workshops and events.

Many of the works featured come from the Wolverhampton Arts + Museums collection, but the show includes important artworks loaned from other regional galleries and exciting contemporary artists working on paper today.

Up and coming local illustrators and artists have been given the chance for their work to hang on the same gallery walls as art giants such as Picasso and Turner, giving the exhibition a rich and diverse feel which will surprise visitors to the exhibition.

The work isn’t just confined to the walls, visitors can experience the exciting sphinx-like sculpture by Toby Ziegler called I Wish I Were A Hole In The Ground. This large scale sculpture appears to have been made from a flat-pack kit and illuminates the room from within its structure. The piece is on loan from another local gallery, New Art Gallery Walsall.

Exhibition Curator Kate Pryor-Williams said: “We hope that the rich variety of artworks on display in this exhibition will excite and surprise visitors, there is definitely something for everyone to be inspired by. The free summer events are a great chance for families to come along and get creative, and learn more about what fantastic artwork is held in the Wolverhampton collection.”

At the summer events visitors can learn drawing techniques, build a toy theatre from paper, become a book –binder, make a funky fan for those hot summer days, create a comic book and more.
