KANSAS CITY, MO.- The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art presents "Do-Ho Suh: The Perfect Home," on view through March 2, 2003. Do-Ho Suh examines notions of the individual, the collective, personal space, and his experience of transcultural displacement as a Korean person living in the United States. Suh has said of his work, "My desire to guard and carry around my very own intimate space makes me perceive space as infinitely moveable … transportable and translatable." His work also explores the disparate notions of the individual in Eastern and Western cultures: Americans value private, personal space, while most Koreans have very little of it, suggesting the Eastern cultural imperative of the good of the collective whole over the individual. Do-Ho Suh is an artist in residence; this is his first solo museum exhibition in the Midwest.
