NEW YORK.- Eyebeam has chosen the architecture firm that will design its new facility, opening in 2006. Diller + Scofidio was selected from over thirty firms participating in the year long architectural design competition. The new building will be located at the current interim exhibition and education space for Eyebeam at 540 West 21st Street, New York. The new Eyebeam building will provide unprecedented production and exhibition opportunities for artists exploring new media in video, film and moving image art, DVD production, installation, 2D/3D digital imaging, net art and sound and performance art forms.
Eyebeam conducted a three-phase, year long competition for its facility on 21st Street in New York City. The competition invited the response of an international group of architects selected for the depth of their engagement with contemporary artistic culture in general and innovative design in particular. From an original list of 30 firms invited to submit qualifications in Phase One, thirteen semi-finalists were selected to continue in the competition and develop conceptual designs during Phase Two. The selection of Phase Three finalists was based upon exceptional responses to issues set forth in the competition package - - Interrelation, Intersection, Transformation and Adaptation. In selecting a winner, Eyebeam hopes to thread these issues into the new building.
Phase Three of the Architecture Design Competition runs from June 18 through August 30, 2001. In Phase Three, finalists Diller+Scofidio, Leeser Architects and MVRDV developed schematic designs for Eyebeam's new facility for 21st Street.. The designs were exhibited at Eyebeam's temporary galleries from September 27 - October 28, 2001, along with the 13 conceptual designs submitted in Phase Two.
Phase Two of the Architecture Design Competition began on January 15 and concluded March 16, 2001 with the submission of conceptual designs by a group of 13 international firms. The designs were presented on June 13, 200l at Eyebeam's temporary galleries to Eyebeam's Board of Directors, the press, and participating architects. From these designs, three firms were be selected to compete in the final phase of the competition. For Phase Two architects, please refer to the list below.
