Elsewhere to Host Annual Convention of Artists, Collaborators on December 30

GREENSBORO, NC.- Once a year, Greensboro's Elsewhere Collaborative is the site of a score of artists gathering to celebrate the passing of the year in an unique way- by creating works and performances together. Elsewhere hosts upwards of 30 visiting artists every year, each of whom are invited to return to Greensboro for a week during Elsewhere's winter season, during which the unheated 100 year-old building is closed to the public. All of the artists are members of Elsewhere's "etc. collective", a group that comprises past visiting artists and current and former staff members.

Arriving to Greensboro from all reaches of the earth, the etc. artists typically work on one or two large projects and put on a one-night performance in Elsewhere's street-front window. This year, members of etc. will formulate plans for an upcoming show at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC, while also writing and filming an orientation video to Elsewhere for future visiting artists, staff members, and interns. In the past, projects have included a group show at the Community Foundation, Art Shanties in Minnesota, and a mail art show exhibited in New Zealand.

The performance is a fictional narrative pageant that takes place in the world of the Gunn Family, an group of family members who continually find themselves grappling with epic journeys, insurmountable conceptual challenges, and of course, intra-family strife. This year's performance, entitled "Gunn Family Orientation: a tragedy of comedic persuasion", is scheduled to take place at 8:00pm on December 30th, and is free and open for anyone to enjoy from the street in provided seating.

Elsewhere Collaborative is a living museum and experimental production environment in downtown Greensboro, NC set within a three-story former thrift store, boarding house, and warehouse containing one woman's enormous 58-year collection of American surplus, thrift, and antiques. Elsewhere invites experimental creators to utilizing an immense collection of objects, no longer for sale and instead circulating internally, as material or inspiration for site-specific projects that become part of an endlessly transforming environment of objects and works.
