Kunsthalle Tübingen Opens Largest Retrospective on Mel Ramos
Mel Ramos, "The Artists Studio #1", 1987. Öl auf Leinwand, 155x208 cm. İVG Bild-Kunst, Bonn, 2010.

TUBINGEN.- The Kunsthalle Tübingen presents the largest Ramos exhibition in Germany and even Europe with 89 works on art on loan from around the world. This is the most comprehensive retrospective worldwide ever dedicated to the important American painter, Mel Ramos. Two anniversaries mark this occasion, namely, the 75th birthday of the artist and the over 50 year existence of the Pop Art movement of which Mel Ramos is a main representative. This comprehensive sweep of his life´s work, which is characterized by the subject of nude art, encompasses mainly paintings, but also preliminary sketches, sculptures, and lithographs. All phases from the late 1950´s to the present are represented by well-known major works.

The rich program accompanying this exhibit is the result of a collaboration with other institutions: the Landestheater Tübingen is presenting the piece „Nipplejesus“ by Nick Hornby in the exhibition; the Zeicheninstitut of Tübingen University is offering a course in nude art drawing at the exhibition and also a tour; the Kreissparkasse Tübingen is sponsoring a lecture by Klaus Honnef about Mel Ramos and by Tilman Osterwold about Pop Art; the German-American Institute (DAI) Tübingen is holding a feminist-critical lecture on Ramos by Sigrid Ruby; Holger Bunk, Professor of painting at the Stuttgart Academy, together with Daniel J. Schreiber, the Managing Curator of the Kunsthalle Tübingen, invite the public to a dialogue and tour through the exhibition; in cooperation with the Volkshochschule Tübingen, Daniel J. Schreiber and Andrea Richter will also hold select events during the exhibition. On January 30 at 3 PM, Mel Ramos himself will give a tour through the exhibition.
