NEW YORK, NY.- The Drawing Center announces the appointment of Claire Gilman to the post of Curator, effective July 1, 2010.

The Drawing Center’s Executive Director, Brett Littman, says of the appointment, “Claire brings to The Drawing Center the right level of intellectual rigor and curiosity, art historical knowledge, extensive publishing experience, and an engagement with the art and artists of our time that will continue to push our programming in new and interesting directions.”

Frances Beatty Adler, Co-Chair of The Drawing Center Board of Directors remarks, “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Claire Gilman to The Drawing Center. She is a brilliant scholar, a gifted writer, and an adventurous curator, which makes her ideal for the position at The Drawing Center.”

Gilman joins The Drawing Center with a Ph.D. in art history from Columbia University, where she wrote a dissertation entitled Arte Povera’s Theatre: Artifice and Anti-Modernism in Italian Art of the 1960s (2006). From 2003–-2006, she served as a curatorial fellow at The Museum of Modern Art, New York under Kynaston McShine in the Department of the Chief Curator at Large, where she worked on Edvard Munch: The Modern Life of the Soul and Greater New York: 2005. Other exhibitions that she has curated include The Storyteller, a travelling exhibition organized and circulated by iCI (The Salina Art Center, Kansas; The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, Parsons; The Art Gallery of Ontario; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, 2009–2010) and Arte Povera: Selections from the Sonnabend Collection (The Wallach Art Gallery, Columbia University, 2001). Gilman has taught art history and critical theory at Columbia University; The Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College; The Corcoran College for Art and Design; and MoMA. She has also written extensively for publications including Art Journal, CAA Reviews, Documents, Frieze, and October.

“The Drawing Center combines a breadth of scope with a specificity of vision that is unparalleled,” Gilman said. “I am thrilled to be joining this unique institution with its history of innovative, investigative programming and its commitment to interrogating the role of drawing throughout history and today.”
