Rodin, A Magnificent Obsession, Now In Melbourne |
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA.- Rodin is widely recognized as one of the greatest sculptors ever. His place in history is secured by vigorous and expressive work, marked with the sculptor's hand in energetic pummelling of the molded material. Rodin did nothing half-hearted. His themes are as sanguine as the sculptural treatment: extreme in their emotional pitch and often outlandishly libidinous. Rodin, a Magnificent Obsession - organised by the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation and first seen in Australia at the National Gallery in Canberra - can now be seen at the McClelland Gallery until May 19. It is a dense exhibition that amply demonstrates that Rodin was one hell of a talent. The sculptures show a kind of spontaneous drawing in the medium that matches the sense of turmoil and struggle in the figures.
