Fire and Form: The Art of Contemporary Glass

WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA.- The Norton Museum of Art presents “Fire and Form: The Art of Contemporary Glass,” on view through March 23, 2003. Studio glass combines the eye of the artist with the technique, flamboyance and precision of the glassmaker: the result is a unique form of modern art. The history of studio glass begins in the 1960s with more intimate works and develops over subsequent decades into the large glass sculptures and installation pieces of today. This spectacular exhibition, presented exclusively at the Norton Museum of Art, comprises a dazzling array of approximately 100 works by American and European masters working in stylistic modes such as Abstraction, Naturalism, and Realism. The role of performance is regarded as equally important in the creation of modern masterpieces of glass. Objects vary in type from the celebrated works of Dale Chihuly, inspired by the organic shapes of flowers, shells, and rock formations, to the architectural constructions of Tom Patti. This exhibition is organized by the Norton Museum of Art with guest curator, William Warmus. The local presentation of this exhibition is sponsored in part by the Friends of Nicki Harris and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Local media support is provided by The Palm Beach Post, and WPTV NewsChannel 5.
