MADRID, SPAIN.- Claude Cassirer, an American citizen, is requesting the return of the work of art "Rue Saint-Honoré, après midi, effet de pluie" (1879) painted by Camille Pissarro to the Thyssen Museum in Madrid. The museum answered that it acquired the work (absolutely) legally in an art gallery in 1976. The work is on exhibit at the Thyssen Museum in Madrid. The American claims the work was taken from his family by the Nazis in Germany in 1938. The museum also stated that in 1993 the provenance of the works of the collection were checked because the collection became property of the state. They claim that the legal period to make any claims in Spain have expired.
