PARIS, FRANCE.- The Cartier Foundation presents "Fragilisme", on view through June 9, 2002 with works by Alessandro Mendini, Vincent Beaurin and Fabrice Domercq. "Fragilism" is a term that instills doubt. It postulates the fragility of all things. For Mendini, it evokes "a way of seeing the world... I have always thought that life consisted entirely of uncertainties...that is what is curious about it." "Fragilism" is "a theory made for this life that tends to keep slidding downwards. It is an aesthetic project built on sand... a method, a source of great strength (that consists in) accepting weakness as if it were a quality..." Frabrice Domercq defines it as a "state of excitement, of responsiveness, glimmerings, flashes. The nature of things deep down. Courage and struggle", whereas Vincent Beaurin states that "For me, 'Fragilism' is a blade that cuts two ways, in the from of a little logo. It's Edwards Scissorhands. 'Fragilism' is an idea. One day, it rolled across the table and fell and broke. Maybe it has to do with people's permeability. Their complexity."
