Glass Membrane: Scanner to Screen |

RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA.- Glass Membrane: Scanner to Screen completes the final segment in a three-part series of exhibitions that feature fully developed applications of the basic techniques taught in the Digital Studio. Glass Membrane runs through May 19, 2002 and focuses on the work of artists who have used scanner technology as a primary mode of production. As with the previous exhibitions in this series, Glass Membrane will be an invitational combining the work of established artists and advanced students of the Digital Studio. However, as a shift from previous exhibitions Glass Membrane will put less emphasis on digital techniques, instead seeking works with diverse conceptual and formal premises. The opening of Glass Membrane, at NOON on March 23, 2002, will be followed at 2 PM by a Digital Studio Video Screening of short works created by Digital Studio students and local artists.
Glass Membrane provides an interesting sequel to the Fall 2000 exhibition of Life Imprints copy-scan arrt by Dutch artist Lieve Prins. Prins' work is noted for its immediacy and color, characteristics she attributes to the technique of using a color copier. The digital scanner also allows for an immediacy in both physical presence of the image and response by the artist so that work can be manipulated as it is being created. While the technique of the copier and the scanner differ, perhaps most notably in the room they leave for editing and revision, they share a common theme in expanding the notion of what is photographic. Technology, especially digital technology, has forever altered the practice and perception of photography. In Glass Membrane and the Digital Studio Video Screening, visitors to the museum will have a chance to see some of the latest work by local artists working with digital technologies.
