Orange County Museum of Art Gets Grant

NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA.- The Orange County Museum of Art has received a $10,000 grant from the New York-based Judith Rothschild Foundation to fund a retrospective exhibition of work by Swiss painter Hans Burkhardt. Curator Sarah Vure is organizing the show, which is scheduled for September-December 2004.
Born in Basel, Burkhardt immigrated to New York in 1924, where he studied with Abstract Expressionist Arshile Gorky. He moved to Los Angeles in 1937, where he encountered Surrealists Man Ray, Knud Merrild and Eugene Berman. He died in 1994.
The grant will also help support a catalog and educational programs. This year, the Judith Rothschild Foundation has awarded more than $273,000 in grants.
OCMA serves Southern California with a rich variety of exhibitions and programs and brings a dynamic spark to the cultural life of the entire community. OCMA’s stimulating educational programs provide gallery tours, artists’ talks, workshops, lectures,  symposiums, and performances to a variety of audiences in Orange County, from pre-schoolers  to senior citizens, as well as seniors, art collectors, students, and everyone with an interest in the visual arts. The Education Department provides a link between the work of art and the viewer, encouraging visual literacy in the viewing audience and fostering an understanding of and appreciation for the creative process.
