NEW YORK, NY.- From May 310, artnet Auctions will offer paintings of prints of leading American Scene Painting artists including Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh, Grant Wood, and Martin Lewis with estimates ranging from $1,500$300,000.
The highlight is Thomas Hart Bentons Ten Pound Hammers, 1965 (estimate: $200,000$300,000), an exceptionally rich painting to be included in the forthcoming Benton catalogue raisonné. Also by Benton, a group of oil on paper Flower Studies (9 works), c.1914 (estimate: $20,000$30,000), deconstructing the process by which the artist produced his work and The Corral, c.1930s (estimate: $20,000$30,000), a charming pen and ink study of ranching life.
Also going live is the sultry watercolor Striptease with Black Stockings by Reginald Marsh, 1938 (estimate: $30,000$40,000), a voyeuristic look into a 1930s burlesque show.
Martin Lewis masterful etchings Chance Meeting, 194041 (estimate: $15,000$25,000), and New York in Night, 1932 (estimate: $7,000$9,000), top the American Scene prints selection to include, amongst others, Grant Woods Approaching Storm, 1940 (estimate: $6,000$8,000), and Louis Lozowicks Backyards of Broadway, 1926 (estimate: $7,000$9,000).
Rounding out the sale with a more modern take on the classical nude is Milton Averys rhythmic monotype Bather with Blue Towel, 1950 (estimate: $30,000$50,000).
