LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.- Five candidates were selected by the board of trustees of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County to design its Exposition Park complex renovation. The selected firms are: David Chipperfield Architects (London), Foster and Partners (London), Herzog & de Meuron (Switzerland), Steven Holl Architects (New York), and Machada and Silvetti Associates (Boston). According to Jane Pisano, president and director of the Natural History Museum, museum officials will meet with the architects in May and make their final selection this summer. The museum will start its capital campaign in June 2003 and construction is planned for 2006. Pisano stated, "We want a more iconic architecture--something that will be a magnet to the Exposition Park area. All of these architects are capable of that. The existing additions weren't done in a way that was sensitive to the original structure, and we have an opportunity to have an architecture that relates better to its context, to make a more inside-outside experience with the parks."
