Open Call To Artists

NEW YORK.- White Columns, New York's oldest alternative space, seeks submissions for consideration for inclusion in an upcoming exhibition entitled Regarding Gloria. Regarding Gloria is being curated by Catherine Morris, an independent curator specializing in the art of the 1970s, and Lauren Ross, Director/Chief Curator of White Columns. It will be presented at White Columns in the fall of 2002, immediately following Gloria, an exhibition of 1970s feminist art curated by Morris and Ingrid Schaffner, Senior Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia. These back-to-back exhibitions will revisit feminist art of the '70s and explore its effect on younger generations. Regarding Gloria will address the following questions: How has the legacy of '70s feminism influenced a new generation of women artists? What approaches are valid for artists with feminist sensibilities thirty-plus years after the start of first-generation feminist art? How has the current cultural climate changed the methods and tactics necessary for this expression today? Why do many women artists today disavow the influence of feminism?

The artists in Regarding Gloria will be selected through an open call process. Artists may apply either with work that is already completed, or with a proposal for new work(s) to be created for the exhibition. Preference will be given to emerging artists who do not have commercial gallery representation with a New York City gallery. Both female and male artists are welcome to apply.

The curators will review all applications and select six artists for inclusion in the exhibition. Those six artists will each receive a $500 honorarium which may be used towards the production of their work. Shipping of artwork will be covered by White Columns, but not travel for the artist. The deadline for submissions is April 28, 2002. Applications must be in the gallery by 6 pm on that date, not postmarked. Notification of the artists selected will take place on June 1. Regarding Gloria is currently scheduled for October 25 - December 1, 2002, although the exact dates are subject to change.
