Alternative to Artissima: Art event to be held in a former prison, each gallery to show work in a cell!
The Others gathers under the same roof around 60 arts organisations, both for-profit and non-profit committed to develop ongoing programmes dedicated to young artists.

TURIN.- The Others is an innovative international exhibition project with a new format entirely dedicated to foster new contemporary art, promoted by the organisation The Others and hosted in Le Nuove, a suggestive large 1870 prison, now transformed in a permanent museum and sometimes used for pop up events, exhibitions and live concerts.

The Others gathers under the same roof around 60 arts organisations, both for-profit and non-profit committed to develop ongoing programmes dedicated to young artists. These include: galleries founded after 1st Jan 2009, and regardless of year of establishment, non-profit organisations, foundations, artists’ collectives, residencies and associations, arts prizes, academies, institutions and editorial projects. The participants meet at The Others to foster debates and opportunities within the current “global contemporary art community”. The Others acts as a catalyst for showcasing the multi-facets creative scene and its current protagonists, different for constituency, objectives and expression channels. It creates a completely new format for promoting and valuing them while also actively inviting the public to discover and experience the new voices and energies of the international art world.

The participants are selected by a Committee composed of Andrea Bruciati, Director of la Galleria Comunale of Contemporary Art of Montefalcone; Claudio Composti, Director of Mc2 Gallery, Milan; Alessandro Facente, a young independent Curator and Michele Lupi Director of Rolling Stone magazine, partner of The Others.

The event introduces also an original formula shifting the opening times to evenings, from 6pm till 1am and including an entertainment programme with performances, readings, live music, dj sets and video projections accompanying the main fair. This will make Le Nuove an unrivaled meeting point for art amateurs, younger audiences and for the professionals of the sector who will be in town for Turin’s contemporary art week.

The opening night is on the 3rd of November from 9pm onwards. A 1433 party will be organised by the cult music magazine the Rolling Stones, a bold international editorial project that shares with The Others a passion for talent scouting and giving visibility to new creativity – the programme will include a dj sets selected by the editorial team. As part of the event, three Prizes will be assigned:

*Very smart Award – Created in collaboration with smart Center Torino and smart, a brand that actively promotes innovation and creativity. The prize consists of 2000 euros and will be awarded to an artwork of small dimensions. The winning work will be selected by Guido Novaro (smart), Carla Testore (art critic) and Andrea Bruciati (Director of la Galleria Comunale of Contemporary Art of Montefalcone).

*Rolling Stone Award – A selection of work shown will be awarded with 1500 euros; the first edition of a prize assigned by the magazine, and selected by The Others committee.

*BasicNet Residency – The Others hosts the first edition of a new series of artists’ residencies, which will take place at the BasicVillage, in Turin, every year - a creative collaboration and a cultural exchange amongst the awarded artist, the city of Turin and the local institutions. The winner will be selected by Marco Boglione, president of BasicNet and Olga Gambari, independent curator.
