"Artificial Intelligence in Art" Opens

TACOMA, WASHINGTON.- The Tacoma Art Museum presents "Artificial Intelligence in Art," on view through June 16, 2002. Wind-up toy robots, pulp-fiction space adventure novels, and science fiction movies have all attempted to put a human-like persona to artificial intelligence. Artists have been called upon to give form to the formless. Whether it is the giant silver Gort emerging with Michael Rennie in The Day Earth Stood Still, the faceless HAL 9000 computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey, or the loveable R2D2 in Star Wars, popular culture has made A.I. come alive. This exhibition will present a selection of book cover art, tin toys, video and other work.
