RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.- The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts presents "A Golden Legacy: Fifty Years of the Arthur and Margaret Glasgow Fund," on view through August 18. The exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the fund. Throughout the museum, selected other works purchased through the fund will also be identified.
“The museum today stands on the brink of expansion and renovation,” says Director Dr. Michael Brand.
“The collections have probably grown beyond the dreams of the museum’s founders, through the increase in art-purchase endowments such as the Glasgow Fund and through subsequent private donations of art. As we strive to serve our public in the 21st century, the museum remains committed to the memory of all those who have had a hand in its remarkable transformation since its birth in 1936. The Glasgows have certainly inspired many other generous Virginians.”
The Arthur and Margaret Glasgow Fund was established in 1952 by two collectors with Richmond ties and has played a key role in the museum’s continued growth, even during difficult economic times, according to Brand.
With income produced by the fund, the museum has purchased some 840 objects.
The first purchase through the fund was made in 1956 – an 1834 oil portrait of Virginian John Marshall by Rembrandt Peale (the painting is on view in the museum’s American Galleries).
