Jerome Kaplan (1920-1997), FISI (Food is So Important), 1955. Oil on canvas. Gift of Rachel Kaplan.

PHILADELPHIA, PA.- La Salle University Art Museum presents an exhibition of recent gifts of artwork donated from the private collections of both alumni and non-alumni supporters as well as an oil painting gifted by the Rosenbach Museum and Library. The exhibition features a selection of artworks chosen out of several hundred artworks given to the Art Museum during the past two years.

The exhibition showcases work by artists from Europe and America, as well as Africa and Asia --- reflecting the Art Museum’s diverse collecting interests and its educational mission within an increasingly global world. Highlights include a portrait of James McNeill Whistler by his student Walter Greaves (1846-1930), received as a gift from the Rosenbach Museum and Library; a lithograph by German Surrealist Max Ernst (1891-1976) from the Estate of Lady Isolde Radzinowicz; a painting, intaglio plate and proof prints by local Germantown artist Jerome Kaplan (1920-1997) from his daughter Rachel Kaplan; and a Piranesi print from the Estate of La Salle University Trustee Helen North. The Art Museum will also display two large wooden sculptures from West Africa, received as a gift from Yvonne Shafer Chamberlain; and a selection of Asian ceramics from alumnus Brian Dursum, and from Dr. Gerald Shepps in memory of his parents Roslyn and Benjamin Shepps.

The La Salle University Art Museum is located on the lower level of Olney Hall on the campus of La Salle University at 19th St. and Olney Ave. Summer hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Admission is free, though donations are accepted. Please call to schedule group visits. Special tours can be arranged. For further information call 215.951.1221
