NEW YORK, NY.- Von Lintel Gallery presents Suspended Disbelief, a group exhibition featuring work by Marco Breuer, John Chiara, Yvonne Estrada, Dana Melamed, Antonio Murado, Mark Sheinkman, Joseph Stashkevetch, Allyson Strafella and Melanie Willhide.

Suspended Disbelief asks its audience to put its disbelief aside. Assembling works by nine contemporary artists, the exhibition challenges its viewers to accept a basic, though unlikely, premise about each piece in the show in order to fully engage in the work. Dana Melamed's wall piece uses unconventional materials to create a sprawling urban landscape that couldn't possibly exist in reality. Marco Breuer's one-of-a-kind photographs are made without a camera or negative, while Joseph Stashkevetch's detailed drawing is difficult to imagine as anything but a photograph. John Chiara and Antonio Murado offer their own unique take on landscape as Yvonne Estrada and Allyson Strafella's intricate, abstract drawings are created using tools not often associated with the medium. Mark Sheinkman makes paintings with graphite, further blurring the medium's boundaries with his subtractive, rather than additive, process. Melanie Willhide's photographs of 50s pinup girls which once read like straight photography are now digitally sliced, mirrored and repeated in a playful demonstration of photography's capacity for the inauthentic.

Marco Breuer's work is collected by over 25 public institutions worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University; the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles: and the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, Germany. Breuer was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 2006 and in 2007 Aperture published a monograph of his work titled Early Recordings.

John Chiara’s work has been reviewed in numerous publications including the Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, New Yorker and Artforum. In 2011, the Pilara Foundation commissioned John Chiara’s Bridge Project for their permanent collection. The artist lives and works in San Francisco.

Yvonne Estrada has exhibited her work for the past three decades at numerous institutions including Wave Hill, Bronx, NY; the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore; and the Museum of Modern Art, Bogota, Colombia. Estrada was awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts painting fellowship in 2004. A native of Colombia, the artist currently lives and works in New York.

Isreali-born Dana Melamed holds a BA in Architectural Studies from Ort Technikum, Israel. Melamed has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries throughout the United States. A review of her most recent solo exhibition appears in the current summer 2012 edition of ARTnews. Newly represented by Von Lintel Gallery, the artist lives and works in New Jersey.

Antonio Murado’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally for nearly two decades. His work is held by virtually every museum in Spain and is included in major public and private collections throughout Europe and the United States. A native of Lugo, Spain, the artist currently lives and works in New York.

Mark Sheinkman has exhibited widely throughout the United States and Europe. His work is in numerous museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery in Washington, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He has had one-person museum exhibitions at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and the Museum Gegendstandsfreier Kunst in Germany.

Joseph Stashkevetch has exhibited both nationally and internationally and his work is found in the public collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Houston Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Stashkevetch's work has been reviewed and/or featured in the New York Times, New York Magazine, Time Out, Art on Paper, The New Yorker and Art in America. The artist lives and works in New York City.

Allyson Strafella’s work has been exhibited for nearly two decades, most recently in group exhibitions at the University of Albany, the Norton Museum of Art and the Katonah Museum of Art. Strafella is represented in numerous public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University; the Hammer Museum; and the Yale Art Museum. The artist lives and works in upstate New York.

Melanie Willhide has an MFA in Photography from Yale University and has exhibited throughout the United States for nearly two decades. Her work has been reviewed and featured in the New York Times, Blind Spot, the Boston Globe and the Los Angeles Times. A review of her most recent solo exhibition at Von Lintel Gallery appears in the June/July 2012 issue of Art in America. Willhide lives and works in Los Angeles.
