LONDON.- Returning to its prime location on Berkeley Square, the 6th edition of PAD London launches with a strong contingent of 60 leading galleries from Europe, the USA and Asia, and includes 20 new participants. Renowned for its magnificent blend of modern art, design, decorative arts, photography and tribal art, PAD London is the place to discover and acquire the most coveted pieces available on the market today.

Modern art flourishes with the first-time participation of four prominent American dealers. Castelli Gallery, L&M Arts, Skarstedt Gallery and Paul Kasmin Gallery come together to present a striking panorama of Pop Art, with a particular focus on Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. An additional 8 new modern art galleries feature renowned works with an exceptional provenance and history. Mayoral Galeria d'Art (Barcelona) presents Jean-Michel Basquiat's Untitled-The Origin of Cotton (1987), never before shown in Europe and originally from a private collection in the USA. Two colourful abstract works by Swiss painter Gerard Schneider, both from 1968, feature at Galerie Diane de Polignac (Paris), also never seen on the market before. Galerie Thomas (Munich) exhibits Fernand Léger's masterpiece Les deux femmes à l'oiseau (1942) which demonstrates an exciting development in Léger's oeuvre in its use of bands of colour. Olyvia Fine Art (Seoul/London) showcases paintings by Yayoi Kusama, Yoshitomo Nara and Zeng Fahnzi, alongside Andy Warhol's portraits of Chairman Mao from 1972.

Returning gallery Luxembourg & Dayan (New York/London) presents a one-man show of American artist Rob Pruitt's newest Panda Paintings, in an evocative setting of artworks and artefacts from various periods of China's history. Alexander Calder's black untitled stabile mobile (1967) at Galerie Vedovi (Brussels/Paris) is a fantastic example of the artist's revolutionary breakthrough in which abstraction and movement push toward a new form of expression. In the realm of photography, Michael Hoppen Gallery (London) exhibits an extremely rare collaboration of André Villers and Pablo Picasso from the time when they worked together in Cannes in the 1950s.

The presence of Tribal Art at the fair is reinforced by the extraordinary collection of Pre-Columbian art showcased at Galerie Mermoz (Paris). Mermoz presents a spectacular ceramic Mayan vase (550-850AD) as well as a ceremonial head of Hacha representing the god Xipe Totec (450-750 AD), both from Mexico.

Superb examples of 20th Century and contemporary furniture, decorative arts and jewellery are shown within the field of design at PAD. Pearl Lam Design, which now boasts galleries in both Hong Kong and Shanghai, has commissioned startling new pieces by Chinese designer Danful Yang for the fair. Korean design specialists Gallery Seomi (Seoul) concentrate on furniture which combines both Korean aesthetic traditions and contemporary techniques. Other contemporary design highlights include dynamic furniture pieces by French designer Vincent Darré inspired by the verve of Alexander Calder's twelve original tapestries, also on display, at Galerie du Passage (Paris). Focusing on decorative arts and jewellery by some of the world's most talented metal workers, newcomer Caroline Van Hoek (Brussels) brings stunning vases by Belgian silversmith David Huycke. Conceptual artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov have been commissioned by Elisabetta Cipriani (London) to create The Fly series of jewellery, all using Kabakov's familiar motif made out of gold, emeralds, diamonds and enamel.

This year marks the launch of a prestigious new Moët Hennessy-PAD London Design Prize. The £15,000 prize will be presented to a UK-based designer under 35 whose work will be selected by an expert panel, chaired by Nigel Coates, for its exceptional creative qualities, refined used of materials, and its ability to reflect the artful spirit of contemporary design.
