SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Bonhams Period Art & Design auction, October 14, will present a strong selection of offerings from an artistically curated Private San Francisco Estate Collection, whose residuary beneficiaries include the California Pacific Medical Center Foundation. Special highlights from this estate will include an oil on board, Continental School of The lion hunt (est. $2,000-3,000) and an early 20th century, Vienna, cold painted erotic bronze of a metamorphic owl by Franz Bergman (est. $800-1,200). The owl is perched on a book and hinges open to reveal a female nude, depicted bathing. Also of note from the collection will come a pair of 20th century Burmese giltwood heraldic rampant lions (est. $600-800); as well as paintings, additional Continental items, dresser boxes, glasswear, stemware and porcelains.

A broad selection of Fine Art will appear in the sale, including European paintings and works on paper, with such examples as A portrait of a young woman, an oil on canvas in the Manner of François Hubert Drouais (est. $4,000-6,000) and Ecce Homo, an oil on canvas After Orazio de Ferrari (est. $3,000-5,000). There will also be American works of art, including Ellen Francis Burpee Farr’s oil on canvas, Portrait of Falling Star, 1897 (est. $2,000-3,000); Joseph Antonio Hekking’s oil on canvas, Wooded landscape with a stream, 1859 (est. $3,000-5,000); and Hayley Lever’s oil on panel pair, Views of St. Ives, Cornwall (est. $3,000-5,000), among many others. In addition, there will be more than two dozen prints on offer, by such artists as Stuart Davis, Yozo Hamaguchi, Gene Kloss, Claes Oldenburg and Doel Reed.

Modern and contemporary works of art will be represented in the sale with Wade Hoefer’s oil and collage on canvas of Eden East/West, 1988-89 (est. $3,000-5,000); Tim Stoner’s oil on linen of The Dead, 2004 (est. $3,000-5,000); and Francisco Farreras oil and paper on panel of Number 61, 1960 (est. $2,000-4,000). There will also be modern and contemporary furnishings and décor, including a Verner Panton acrylic and aluminum pendant globe light, designed in 1969 (est. $2,000-3,000); a yellow vinyl tubular bed, circa 1970, with a custom mattress (est. $1,000-1,500); and a mahogany dresser with silvered pulls by the Hickory Furniture Company (est. $900-1,200).

The sale will go on to include a large selection of snuff bottles, from the Collection of Mrs. Fay Plohn, a West Coast Collection, and various owners. Highlights will include two agate snuff bottles: one in the form of a Buddha's hand citron hanging from a leafy branch, and the second of flattened rectangular form, with one side displaying a luohan seated on a tiger beneath a tree (est. $800-1,200) and three inside painted snuff bottles one of a squirrel and pine, reversed by a lotus, the second with a landscape reversed by a figure with a fishing pole and the third of rock crystal painted with figures in a landscape (est. $750-1,200), among many other examples.

Many Chinese ceramics and Chinese Jade, Hardstone, & Soapstone Carvings will also be represented in the sale. One of the examples that will be on offer is a jade beast-form toggle, rendered in the Ming style, depicting a forward facing recumbent tiger, in stone of greenish gray with mottled icy inclusions and black colored striations (est. $700-1,000).

There will also be Property from the Collection of Joseph Klein (1899-1987), New York, New York, including bronze figures, portrait miniatures and majolica of varying estimates; Property from the Conner Prairie Museum, including an assembled Rose Medallion export porcelain partial dinner service of the Late Qing and Republic period ($1,200-1,800); and Property from the Estate of Elinor Majors Carlisle, San Francisco, including a pair of late 20th century, Neoclassical style brass and glass twelve light chandeliers (est. $400-600).
