Among coloured stones, a natural 19.54-Carat Cushion-shaped Colombian Emerald and Diamond Ring estimated at HK$8 – 9 million saw keen competition and brought HK$15.04 million / US$1.93 million (Est. HK$8 – 9 million / US$1 – 1.15 million).”

HONG KONG.- Discussing the Spring Sale Series 2013, Patti Wong, Chairman of Sotheby’s Asia, said: “Sotheby’s was the first international auction house to establish a permanent office and selling base in Hong Kong and this year celebrates its 40-year commitment to its Asian clients. As a globally respected auction house which boasts the strongest worldwide team of experts and client network, we have been able to source some of the best objects and private collections from around the world for our clients. This week’s impressive results are a testimony to our capabilities. We have achieved a world auction record for Kangxi porcelain with the sale of the Magnificent Ruby-Ground Falangcai ‘Double-Lotus’ Bowl from the Collection of Dr. Alice Cheng, stunning prices for Modern Chinese paintings by masters like Zhang Daqian, for Southeast Asian artist Lee Man Fong, and for 20th Century Chinese artists Wang Yidong and Zao Wou-Ki. There was international attention for the single-owner collection devoted to Yoshitomo Nara’s work. Our offering of a stunning private collection of modern decorative clocks by Patek Philippe, Cartier and others were part of a Sale which set a Sotheby’s record and a record for a Sale of Timepieces in Asia. In our Jewellery sale we set a Per-Carat Auction Record for Round White Diamond with the sale of a stunning 28.86-carat Round D Flawless.”

Speaking of Sotheby’s initiatives in Asia, Kevin Ching, Chief Executive Officer of Sotheby’s Asia, said: “Just as Sotheby’s was the first international auction house to introduce fine art auctions to Hong Kong, so today we have been the first in the industry to expand and develop business in China and all over Asia. Having become the first international fine art auction house to secure an auction license in China, we will be holding our first official auction in Beijing later this year. We are also thrilled to have been entrusted once again with a selection of masterpieces by the Chinese master Zhang Daqian (Chang Dai-chien) from the Mei Yun Tang Collection, which is internationally recognised as one of the most preeminent and comprehensive private collections of Zhang Daqian’s paintings. These will be offered at an auction in Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery in late May 2013 where we will also be holding dedicated sales of snuff bottles from the prestigious Mary and George Bloch Collection as well as important
modern watches and clocks.

“As well as serving our existing clients, we look forward to introducing our nearly 300 year-old brand and our excellent services and international standards to the fast-expanding community of collectors and art lovers in China and the rest of Asia.”
